FAQs

Reaching us

* The easiest way to get reach Virserum from the U.K. is by flying from London Stansted, Bristol, Edinburgh or Manchester to Gothenburg, or one of several flights to Copenhagen, with train connections directly from Copenhagen Airport to Växjö .

* There are numerous car hire companies in Växjö, including an American franchise called Rent-a-Wreck, that do slightly older cars at about half the price of their competitors.

Quote "Swim Cycle Sweden" to receive a 10% discount when you book with Rent-a-Wreck.

* Driving here is extremely easy. Wide roads, minimal traffic and an emphasis on safety. Just watch out for stop signs (you must stop, or risk a large fine), the occasional speed camera and moose!

Weather

* Sweden is a wonderful country to visit at all times of the year.

Winter is usually pretty cold and from New Year until sometime in March, the ski slope is open. You can also try ice skating for free at the ice hall. Previous winter visitors greatly enjoyed the ice bathing (and saunas!).

Spring is characterised by frosty mornings and a lot of sun through the day. May is when the weather warms up considerably.

Summer is beautiful. Much sunnier than anywhere in the UK and a lot hotter too. We're one village away from Målilla, which holds the high temperature record for Sweden. Expect 25c as an average air temperature in July and August, and hot days way over 30c.

Autumn is wonderful. Lots of maples in our area that go crimson red at the end of September. Earlier in September, expect a lot of cloud inversions and morning mist as the air temperatures are much lower than the lake.

* Water temperatures vary throughout the year.

December to March. Assume that the water temperature will be close to zero, or indeed frozen. April: 3-10c, May: 8-18c, June: 15-22c, July: 18-25c, August: 18-25c, September: 12-20c, October: 5-12c, November: 0-8c

Economics

* Sweden isn't significantly more expensive than the UK - assume approximately 10% more for food shopping and fuel is cheaper in Sweden currently (July 2023).

Eating out can work out to be slightly cheaper than in the UK. Virserum itself has two pizzerias and there are several country hotels with restaurants, within easy reach.
